I’m exhorting my blog readers to read Tomatoland. This book will change the way you look at your food; it will anger and shock you. You will never look at a supermarket tomato the same way. You will be stunned and enraged that slavery still exists. If you read only one chapter of Tomatoland, read “From the Hands of a Slave.” Barry Estabrook gives graphic details of tomato-pickers in Immokalee, Florida living and working in slave-like conditions, workers being exposed to a plethora of chemicals daily and becoming sick and workers being physically and emotionally abused. Anyone who cares about social justice and the environment must read Tomatoland.
